Hoover Dam – Friday April 1, 2016

We stopped at Lake Meade National Park because it fit our trip home,  Since we are so close to Hover Dam a tour of the dam was a must.

Internet is really really slow.  I have more dam pictures, I’ll go back and add them when I get a better connection.

We were at the dam at 8:00 a.m. visitor’s center opened at 9:00 and we were on the first tour of the day at 9:25.

More later. Back to try and update.
Here is one of the rotors out of a generator for a PM rebuild.
The dam has 17 generators.

This pictures is from the visitor’s gallery looking down the powerhouse.

One of the many tunnels inside the dam.  There is a total of 9 miles of tunnels and rooms inside the dam.  We were at an elevation of 705 feet above sea level and the top of the dam is at 1232 feet, so we were quite a ways down inside.

All the heights inside the dam are measured from sea  level.

This is one of the inspection tubes that goes out to the surface of the dam.

This  is a picture of the wood form that was used to this tube. Concrete was poured around this form and that the form was dismantled leaving the inspection tube.

This  is looking out the end of the inspection tube towards the new bridge.

Another tunnel.

This is one of the passages that goes up and down inside the dam.  I think the guide said one had 1400 steps and another has 1700.

Imprints of the wood used to form this tunnel.

Had to show more dam pictures.  It is really cool dam.

This new bridge built after 9/11.

Parking garage and visitor’s center.

Bronze casting of the people who worked on the rock wall.

Today’s drive up to Virgin River.

Cathedral Gorge State Park, NV – Tuesday September 29, 2015

We are again at Cathedral Gorge State Park on our way towards The Carlsbad Caverns.  Last year we spent 9 days here waiting out the weather while heading south.  Significant thunder storms where in this area and we decided this was the safest place to stay.  The major north/south road, Highway 15, was washed out just south of here and was closed for several days.
Nice day, 90+ outside and 82 inside.

Late additions:

Campsite from the other side.

In the late evening I went out and took a bunch of plant pictures, here are two.

Highway 50, NV – Monday September 28, 2015

This morning I got an email from Verizon saying they had made a change to my cell phone plan.  I logged onto Verizon and I have my “Unlimited Data” plan.  This is good however Jean does not have a txt plan and will pay $0.20 per txt, now that’s a deal for Verizon.

Today’s travel plan is to drive halfway across Nevada on Highway 50 and stay in a rest stop out in the middle of no where.   We decided to give a trip to a Verizon Store and see if they can fix Jean’s txt plan.  At the Spark’s store Caesar said oh yes I can fix that with no problem.  Jean watched he face as he was working through all the computer screens to get the txt plan added “BACK” on our plan.  He worked on it for twenty minutes or so, we will see in a couple of days how successful Caesar was.
Rest stop campsite.
At home we don’t have neat clouds so I have to take sunset and cloud pictures when we are traveling.

William Kent FS Campground, Lake Tahoe – Sunday, September 27, 2015

1:30 p.m.  watching the Seahawks game on my Ipad and NFL Gameday.  This year all I can find is a text of the game action.  Last year and last week I had a text and football field view of the game.  The internet connection I have is so bad and slow I don’t want to spend any more time looking for the better website or I might loose everything I have.

Getting my camera gear ready to take pictures of the Blood Red moon tonight.  There are clouds in the sky so hopefully I’ll get some pictures.
Walked to the lake at 6:45 p.m., the clouds cleared just enough for my first view of the moon at 8:11.  8:11 was the time Lake Tahoe was to get the full eclipse.  Here are some of the pictures I took, none of them are any good.

Winnemucca, NV and Verizon – Wednesday September 23, 2015

We are at an RV park in Winnemucca, Nv.   One of the significant live events happened today 30 miles north of Winnemucca, the “RV” achieved 80,000 miles.

Today on the way down from Owyhee River Jean was unable to get any of her text’s to go through.  When got to Frontier RV Park in Winnemucca I tried to call home and my phone said it was inactive.  Thank goodness Frontier has a good WIFI network, I got onto Verizon’s website and a chat with a rep for an hour and a half to get our phones reactivated.  We had been hacked, our phones changed to two Blackberry Curves and my unlimited txt plan changed to 6 gigs on each phone.   The first answer from the rep was he would US mail or UPS us the information to reactivate the two phones.  After we discussed how this was not a current option he walked me through re-activating the phones, thus the hour and a half.

After the phones were activated I found on the website about the change in my data plan.  This added an additional two hours on the phone and web chats.  The fifth person I talked to actually wanted (at least sounded like it) to help me get my data plan back.  I had two dropped chats and two phone calls dropped ( miss transferred and put on eternal hold).  The fifth person I think will help, she could not reinstate my  plan ( I could go over the reasons however they  are too stupid to actually type out) but would summit the request form to get the unlimited data back.   I followed up this morning (Thursday 9/24/2015) with an additional hour on the phone with a customer service “MANAGER” who also could not personally fix anything and a “FRAUD” department person who I believe is a fraud.  We’ll see what happens over the next couple of days.

Our travels are great and Hank is having fun.
Site 51, New Frontier RV Park
This is a new park and only a quarter full, used Passport America and got two nights for half price.

Elk Flats Campground at Cave Lake State Park, NV – Tuesday June 16, 2015

Got here at 1:00 and we are in site 14.
Did not do anything this afternoon, well not really I did work on the jigsaw puzzle Brian and Christine gave me for Christmas.  Most days when I am driving I’d think about getting started on this puzzle and then after we were stopped I’d forget about it. It is a Shutterfly puzzle Brian had made of a picture I posted on the blog last summer.  I got the outside border done before I had to quit for dinner.
Yesterday while at Cathedral Gorge we had a challenge with the refrigerator.  It seems when the temperature gets over 100 it gets unhappy.  With the sun on the outside of the motor home it had to be between 180 to 200 degrees on the outside of the frig.  This morning while filling up with water I took some temp readings.  At 9:00 a.m.after 20 minutes the shaded side of motor home was 78 degrees, sunny side the fiberglass 110, metal doors 140, steps 124.  The weather channel said it was 96 where we were yesterday. Anyway the temp in the refrig started rising. At 58 degrees it was time to do something. This happened last fall one day at Lees Ferry when the temp got over 100 degrees.  In the fall I worked on it for several hours and made plans to go to Flagstaff to get it worked on. I finally used the electrical disconnect to turn all the power in the coach. This reset the refrig and it worked fine until yesterday.  This worked again, by bed time it was down to 45, at 4 a.m it was 37 and at 7:00 a.m. It was 35, happy refrig, has worked fine all day today.

Very Large Array – Sunday October 4, 2014

We spent an additional 4 hours at the Very Large Array today.  It was the first Saturday of the month behind the scenes tours and this month was the semi-annual expanded tours.  One of the people participating in the tours was Barry Clark one of the scientist’s who wrote and got the original approval for the VLA back in the early 70’s.
They just finished a ten year updating of the electronics including the computer system.

Read the last paragraph, it’s faster then my Dell.

The tour was really interest and we learned a lot about the VLA.  The tour was organized by a group of scientists.  The tour started at the admin building which is about 150 yards from the visitor’s center.  This picture shows the distance.

They had made this sign so everyone would know where the tour’s start.
Here’s the challenge, the sign is with the yellow flags 150 yards away from the visitor’s center from where you could see the flags but not the sign.
Here is some information about the place we are camped.

We have taken a lot of pictures during this trip, however we are using my cellphone for internet access so I’m not posting may pictures.

Here is one from my paddle board outing with Vickie.
