Thank you Bruce Skach balloon ZROZRO7 – my first balloon ride. In a couple of days I will get more pictures and videos up on the website. Again, Thanks Bruce it was amazing!!!
See the October 2019 Video page to watch the first video I took during the flight. Videos are on their own page because of their size. For people living on the road data has to be watched every day. The video is 25 megs long and is the October 09, 2019 section. Video Page
Here are the pictures I took during the flight. I wanted to enjoy the flight and not spend the whole time taking pictures and videos.
I joined the Navy while I was still in high school however
October 09, 1969 was my first day of active service.
3 years, 1 month, 19 days Vietnam 11 months, 22 days
Here are some pictures I found
Boot Camp class picture, where am I?
Answer below
This picture is of me and my brother Richard, from the date it must be after leave from bootcamp and on my way to Pensacola, Florida for A School at NCTC Naval Communication Training Center Corry Field.
This is my A School class. I can only remember two names. Chief Cooper and the guy to the right of me is Kyle I don’t remember is last name. When I graduated from A School I ended up being the 20,000th sailor to graduate from the school. They made a big deal about having graduated the 20,000th sailor. The Admiral in charge of Naval Security Group NSG came to Pensacola for the class graduation.
The
next three pictures are from Vietnam
I don’t remember why this group picture was taken, however
I’m not in it because I took the picture.
This is Dean Carstens and me taken August 20, 1972 (date was
written on the back), my guess is Dean and I were going on watch. We were responsible for manning fire point
number 13 (I think that was the number) it was a short distance from our workspaces.
Again, don’t know why or when the picture was taken but it
is in front of our workspaces. The gate
is open and the gate was never left open so we weren’t there very long.
This has to be when my folks picked me up at SeaTac Airport
on my way home from Vietnam and out of the Navy.
50 years ago today I went into the Navy. 50 years sounds like such a long time ago, I guess it was a long time ago. Bootcamp – San Diego, CA A School – Pensacola, FL First Duty Station – Bureau of Naval Personnel, Washington, DC – CT (Communication Technician) Detailing (Duty Station) Assignment Office SERE School – Coronado, CA Fleet Support Detachment – Danang, Vietnam

Got this year’s fishing license and finally got
out on the river at 2:00
The river flow is double the normal level for this time of year. That guy at the fly shop where I got my license said it is because of all the snow in Colorado last winter. That this water level should be good for fishing.
Got a fish on my first cast. I am using my new 3 weight 10 foot rod I bought for Euro nymphing. Then got a fish on my 3rd cast, ended the day with 25 to the net another 10+ fish on that got off. Truly an amazing day.
Last winter Jean had seen a flying class
advertised at Green River Community College which is two blocks from the big
house. One of the classes was scheduled on July 27 right after we
returned from the spring fishing/birthday trip. It was a two part class one at
the school and one a couple of days later on the Cedar River. During the river
part of the class I actually caught a 10 inch trout. Well that got me
“hooked” and I bought an Orvis 10 foot 3 weight Recon rod. So far it has worked
out really really well.
My fish pictures are not the best in the world as a matter of fact many are really bad. When I take a fish picture my goal is to not have the fish out of the water for very long and remember I am holding a camera, flopping fish in a net and fly rod while standing in the river not wanting to drop any of the three.
Tanya, Mike, Christine and myself went to the ACT Theatre in Seattle to see Brian in UrineTown. This is part of the season tickets we have for the 5th Avenue. The seats we got were front row on the left side of the stage where Brian spent most of his time, it was really fun. Jean stayed home and took care of Jack and Bryn. Jean and I have tickets for Saturday May 4 to see the show.
Some my Navy brothers I spent a year with in DaNang, Vietnam- 1971/72. I took the picture so I’m not in it and I don’t even remember why it was taken but, here it is.
Brian got to ride in a hot air balloon today, ZROZRO7 pilot Bruce Skach from Wichita,KS.
We have been crewing on Bruce’s balloon all week and we have sure learned a lot about ballooning. This is Brian’s “I’m going to fly where in what?”, look.
It is truly an honor to fly in a balloon you just got to help lay out, inflate and now get off the ground.
Went up the river above the BLM area
You can see the BLM parking area at the end of the road just down river from the yellow line where I fished.
This is a closer view
1 strike
1 18 inch trout
These are not very good pictures but this is the largest trout I have every caught. The oval of my net is 16 inches and he was a couple of inches longer than the net. I took me a while to get him to the net, I did not want to loose him.
Saw a lot of big fish but they were just not feeding.
